One Machine, Two Very Different Jobs

Walking a dry beach and diving a wreck site are not the same task, even if you're standing ten feet apart at low tide. The sand is loosely packed, air carries your audio tones clearly, and your swing is slow and deliberate. Underwater, everything compresses — visibility drops, your hearing changes, and salt content shifts how the ground reads. The Scuba Tector Pro is built to handle both, but it doesn't do it automatically. You have to tell it which job it's doing.

Folding In, Folding Out

The first physical change happens before you even hit the water. The coil sits on a 180° adjustable hinge, and for transport it folds down to 250×90×60 mm — small enough to actually fit in a boat bag alongside your dive gear, instead of getting lashed to the outside. Once you're on site and ready to search, unfold it back out to the full 430×90×60 mm working length. This isn't just a packing convenience — a shorter, folded coil won't give you the same sweep width or depth response, so always confirm it's locked into the extended position before you start sweeping, whether that's dry sand or three meters down.

Switching Modes Before You Get Wet

The Scuba Tector Pro has distinct land and dive modes, and this is the setting that matters most for the transition. On land, you're relying primarily on audio — tones through open air are easy to hear and interpret. Underwater, audio through a mask or hood is a different experience, and vibration becomes the more reliable signal. The detector supports audio and/or vibration, paired with an LED indicator, so before you submerge, switch into dive mode and confirm you're getting either the vibration feedback or the LED cue clearly, since your ears alone may not be enough once you're below the surface.

Ground Balance and Salt

This is where a lot of detectors — and a lot of detectorists — get tripped up. Saltwater is mineralized ground, and that can create false signals or mask real ones if the detector isn't reading it correctly. The Scuba Tector Pro runs pulse induction at 95 kHz, a technology that's inherently more stable in saltwater than other detection methods, which is exactly why it's suited for this land-to-sea transition in the first place. That said, ground balance still matters. You can run automatic ground balance for convenience, or switch to manual if you're working a site with unusual mineral content and want tighter control. When you move from dry sand into wet sand into full submersion, it's worth re-checking your ground balance rather than assuming the automatic setting from the beach will carry through unchanged into deeper water.

Sensitivity Isn't a "Set and Forget" Dial

Sensitivity on the Scuba Tector Pro is adjustable, and this is the setting most likely to need a tweak as your environment changes. High sensitivity on a quiet, dry beach can pick up small, shallow targets easily. Take that same sensitivity level into churned-up underwater sediment or near metal boat structures, and you may find yourself chasing noise instead of finds. Dial it back slightly when you're in a busier underwater environment, and bring it back up in cleaner, quieter conditions. There's no single correct number here — it depends on the site — but the point is to treat it as something you check at each transition, not something you set once at the start of the day.

Depth Isn't the Limiting Factor

With a 60 m waterproof rating in both fresh and saltwater, and a sealed housing that holds up at that depth, the Scuba Tector Pro isn't going to be the reason you have to surface early. At 400 g, it's light enough that fatigue over a long dive session isn't a major concern either. The real limiting factor is almost always your settings, not the hardware — which is exactly why getting the mode, ground balance, and sensitivity dialed in before you drop below the surface matters more than the depth rating itself.

The Habit Worth Building

Treat every land-to-water transition as a mini checklist: coil unfolded and locked, mode switched to dive, ground balance rechecked, sensitivity adjusted for the new environment. It takes thirty seconds and it's the difference between a smooth dive and chasing false signals the whole way down. Once identification of a target is confirmed, preservation of whatever you've found is the next priority — but none of that matters if your settings weren't right on the way in.
