Every detectorist remembers their first few outings: a solid signal, a rush of excitement, and then... a hole the size of a dinner plate because you weren't quite sure where the target actually was. Pinpointing fixes that problem, and once it clicks, you'll wonder how you ever dug without it.
Why Pinpointing Matters
A detector's coil doesn't give you a single dot of detection — it gives you a zone. Depending on coil size and target depth, that zone can be several inches wide in every direction. If you just dig wherever the signal sounds loudest on one pass, you're often digging where the edge of the detection field happens to be, not where the target actually sits. That means bigger holes, more disturbed soil, and more time spent scraping around blindly with a trowel.
Good pinpointing means smaller, cleaner recoveries. It's faster for you, and it leaves the ground — and any nearby historical context — much less torn up.
The Logic Behind the X
The classic pinpointing method works on a simple idea: a target's signal should get quieter as you move away from it in any direction, and loudest somewhere near its center. If you sweep across a signal from multiple angles and mentally (or physically) mark where each sweep peaks, those marks will tend to cluster around the true location of the target — forming an X.
Here's the general process:
1. Find your signal and reduce your swing. Once you've got a repeatable signal, stop doing wide sweeps. Narrow your swing down to short, controlled passes directly over the area where the tone sounds strongest.
2. Sweep in one direction, then note the peak. Swing the coil slowly back and forth over the signal along one line — say, left to right. Notice the point where the tone is loudest and most consistent. That's your first reference line.
3. Turn 90 degrees and repeat. Now sweep across the same area but perpendicular to your first pass. Again, find where the tone peaks along this new line.
4. Cross-reference the two lines. Where those two peak-points intersect is your best estimate of the target's location — the center of the X. Many detectorists find it helpful to lightly scratch or place a small marker (a twig, a stone, whatever's handy) at each peak point so the intersection is easy to see rather than relying purely on memory.
5. Confirm before you dig. Do a final light pass directly over the intersection point. If the tone is strong and consistent right there, you've got a solid pinpoint. If it feels off, don't be afraid to repeat the cross-sweep — a few extra seconds here saves a lot of digging later.
A Few Practical Notes
Some detectors include a dedicated pinpoint mode that gives continuous audio feedback as you hover the coil directly over a target, which can be used alongside the X technique rather than instead of it — the mode helps you zero in once you're already close, while the sweeping method gets you close in the first place.
Coil size also matters. Larger coils cover more ground but give a wider, less precise signal zone, meaning your X lines will be broader and pinpointing takes a bit more patience. Smaller or concentric coils tend to narrow that zone down, making the crossing point easier to isolate. Neither is "better" universally — it's a trade-off between coverage and precision depending on what you're hunting.
Ground conditions play a role too. Trashy or mineralized soil can create false peaks or double signals, so don't panic if your first X doesn't line up cleanly. Take a breath, re-sweep, and trust the process rather than the first read.
Digging With Confidence
Once you've marked your X, use a small hand trowel or digger and remove a narrow plug rather than an open crater. Work from the pinpoint outward in small increments, checking the hole and the removed soil with your coil as you go. If the target hasn't shown up in the first few inches, recheck your X rather than widening the hole further — often it means the cross-point needs a slight adjustment, not that you need to dig wider.
Pinpointing precisely isn't about being fussy or slow. It's about respecting the ground you're detecting, saving your energy for a full day out, and making every recovery feel satisfying instead of like a small excavation project. Master the X, and you'll notice your holes get smaller while your finds-per-hour goes up — a trade every detectorist will happily take.
