3 XPointer Max Checks Before You Widen the Hole

Before you widen a hole, run three checks on your XPointer Max: note its ferrous/non-ferrous indication, test the sensitivity level, and retune when the response changes. Together they can narrow the next move without pretending any single indication is a guarantee.

Your primary detector already marked a target zone. That is stage one of recovery. The pinpointer handles stage two: narrowing the response inside the plug or loose soil. Neither tool replaces the other, and the pinpointer's indication should still be checked against what is actually in the hole.

Check 1: Ferrous or Non-Ferrous, Not Just "Something's There"

The XPointer Max uses VLF plus balanced induction with ferrous/non-ferrous discrimination. If the primary detector suggested a non-ferrous target but the pinpointer reports ferrous as you close in, pause and reassess before widening the hole. There may be iron, more than one object, or disturbed soil affecting the response; the indication is a clue, not a final identification.

Check 2: Sensitivity Matched to the Ground, Not Maxed Out

XPointer Max has 4 sensitivity levels. Start with a level that gives a clear, contained response, then move one step at a time. If the response becomes broad or unstable, step back; if it is too weak to relocate consistently, test the next level. This check responds to what the tool is doing in that hole instead of assuming maximum sensitivity is always best.

Check 3: Retune Before You Trust the Beam

Ground balance on the XPointer Max is automatic or manual (retune). Moving between visibly different ground conditions can change the response. A quick retune refreshes the baseline for the ground in front of you. It does not identify the target by itself, so compare the new response with the other two checks.

One clarification worth making plainly: the XPointer Max's 2-colour LED is an alert beam, not a directional arrow. It signals detection state alongside audio and vibration — it does not point toward the target. Precision comes from sweeping methodically and reading the ferrous/non-ferrous, sensitivity, and retune checks together, not from watching where a light seems to "aim."
