What ground balance is actually doing
Soil minerals such as iron oxides, salts, and some clays can create a response alongside any buried object. Ground balance estimates that soil baseline and reduces its effect. If the value is too positive or too negative for the patch under the coil, the response may become noisy or weak targets may become harder to separate. The practical loss is simple: a marginal target can become easier to walk past.
One-time ground balance vs continuous tracking — these are not the same feature
This is where a lot of confusion starts, so it's worth being blunt: a one-time automatic ground balance and continuous ground tracking are two different tools, not two names for the same thing.
- One-time auto ground balance, on detectors that offer it, samples the ground when you trigger the routine and then holds the resulting value. It is a snapshot.
- Continuous ground tracking, when available, keeps updating the ground value as you move. It is an ongoing adjustment, not a snapshot.
Treating these as interchangeable is exactly how people end up chasing phantom problems — blaming "auto ground balance" for instability that's actually a tracking mode reacting to something else nearby, or blaming manual settings for drift that's actually the one-time value going stale on genuinely changing ground.
The coil-pump response check — not a bare-ground sweep
Don't just wave the coil once over open dirt and call it balanced. A proper check confirms the ground balance is actually holding, not just that it ran once.
- Find a patch of ground with no visible targets and pump the coil up and down a few inches over it — not sweeping side to side, but a vertical pumping motion.
- Listen for the threshold response. On correctly balanced ground, pumping up and down should produce little to no change in tone — a flat, quiet response as the coil gets closer and farther from the soil.
- If you hear a rising tone as the coil comes down (positive response) or a dropping/broken tone (negative response), the ground balance is off in that direction, and it's worth re-running the balance procedure before you dig anywhere in that patch.
- Repeat this check when the ground clearly changes character — a different field, a wet patch after rain, a spot with visible mineralized rock — rather than assuming one balance value covers an entire site.
This pump-test is the fast, repeatable way to confirm balance is actually doing its job, instead of just trusting that it ran.
When to use manual vs when to lean on auto
- Auto (one-time) ground balance is a useful starting point when your detector offers it: it is quick and avoids guessing at the initial value.
- Manual ground balance gives you direct control when the pump test still shows a response or when the ground changes sharply across a small area.
- Continuous tracking can help while the ground changes as you move. Because implementations differ, compare it with a locked value on a clean test patch instead of assuming tracking is always better.
None of this comes with a universal depth number attached — how much any of it matters shifts with soil mineralization, moisture, and the detector you're running, so treat the pump-check as your ground truth, not a chart.
